Chelsea Transfer News: Blues To Make £40 Million Wayne Rooney Bid?

Mirror. The Blues have already had two offers for the Manchester United striker turned down by the Premier League champions - the latest believed to be in the region of £25 million. But Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho wants a new No.9 and will be backed to the hilt by owner Roman Abramovich, who is prepared to green-light a mega four-year-contract worth £300,000-per-week for the 27-year-old. However, United are continuing to stand by their official position that the forward will not be sold this summer and if the Blues fail to crack their resolve, they will instead turn to Borussia Dortmund ace Robert Lewandowski. But Mourinho is still confident of landing Rooney and is hoping the sheer size of the new bid will persuade United into doing business for a player who turns 28 in October and whose market value will drop after September 2. Rooney's value would depreciate sharply after the transfer window closes as he only has two years left on his current contract at Old Trafford, and it's unlikely United could ever command a £40 million fee again. Lewandowski meanwhile is in the final year of his contract but appears to have his heart set on a move to Dortmund's Bundesliga rivals Bayern Munich. But Chelsea know Dortmund will sell for £40 million - the alternative is to lose the prolific forward for nothing to a main title rival next summer.
