Former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso has admitted he doesn’t know what the future holds for his Real Madrid career.
The Spanish giants have failed to offer the 31-year-old a contract extension on his contract that expires in 18 months time. According to The Daily Mail, he has told reporters in Spain: “There is always a chance I could go back to the Premier League”.
Some Liverpool fans might have hoped Alonso, who spent five years at Anfield before returning to his homeland in 2009, could return to former club Liverpool, but with the age, price and wage of the midfielder, that could be unlikely to happen. Although the player himself has admitted he’d love to return to Liverpool, and would probably favour a move to Anfield, Chelsea seem much more likely suitors.
Why? They’d pay the fee and the wage no problem. They could also offer Champions League football and a chance of winning the league- something Liverpool won’t be offering anytime soon. Chelsea also have a lack of centre midfield options, with Oriol Romeu injured and John Obi Mikel not currently being considered. That leaves only Frank Lampard, Ramires and centre-back David Luiz as options – Alonso would surely add a different dimension to the Chelsea midfield.
The signing of Alonso could also help to improve the form of Fernando Torres. Benitez has already reinvigorated Torres’ Chelsea career and Alonso would definitely further this improvement as they know each other well, and have experience of how each other play.
However, as ideallic as this move sounds, there is a huge potential barrier.
Liverpool fans will point out the bust-up between player and coach following Benitez’s attempt to sell Alonso to facilitate a move for Gareth Barry as a factor to why Alonso won’t be on his way to Chelsea. If the move were to materialise then Benitez and Alonso would have to put personal differences aside, which would seem unlikely.”
With the potential availability of Xabi Alonso, Benitez is sure to be interested. Whether such a move will materialise is debatable.
“What do you think? Could this move materialise or is it simply too far-fetched? Have your say below.”

Rubbish, lazy Journalism whoever wrote this should get a different job. Alonso left Anfield because of Rafa you buffoon.
This seems highly unlikely, Alonso was forced out of Liverpool due to Benitez’s public courting of Gareth Barry, cant see him forgetting that any time soon
I’d very much doubt it seen as it was rafa who pushes alsonso out of anfield!!
This is a brilliantly constructed and assessed article with just one tiny little flaw, namely, that it’s bollocks.
The reason Alonso left Anfield was because of Rafa told Alonso that he was not good enough and was trying (and failing) to get Barry from Villa in to replace him.
Not sure, even if you paid him handsomely, that he’d come running for Rafa. Xabi has always struck me as a genuine footballer, being Basque probably helps, please don’t ask me to explain that as well Billy.
Try a little research before hitting keys, it would save us all a lot of time.
Inaccurate reportage! Rafa was the reason that Alonzo left Liverpool in the first place, I highly doubt he’d want to re-join Benitez.
All Liverpool supporters would love him back but Alonso returning to Liverpool has nothing to do with winning trophies or money – It’s his love for the club and supporters.
As for Chelsea, well Benitez was the one who had a bust up with Alonso when Rafa was trying to sign Gareth Barry which is the real reason he left Liverpool for Real Madrid.
you’ve obviously forgotten to take into account how much Xabi hates Rafa and the reason why he left in the first place. It will never happen.
Wow, you are clueless, Benitez is the reason he left Liverpool as he tried to sell Alonso to buy Gareth Barry and not withstanding that, Benitez won’t be there after May anyway!!
If I remember rightly, wasn’t it Benitez himself who, against Xabi’s wishes, decided he was no longer good enough for LFC and instead persevered with the move for Gareth Barry. Which inevitably left Xabi with no alternative but to move elsewhere. Why therefore, would the man that has continuously declared his love for the club want to team up with Benitez now? I find it hard to believe that money would be Xabi’s incentive at this point in his career. He is already at a club that can offer him chances of winning things, so there may be some room for romanticising. I can imagine a very contented Xabi Alonso were his playing days ended at Anfield after helping the club back up the table!
After the fiasco at Liverpool when Rafa tried to swap Alonso for Gareth Barry, I don’t think Alonso will be risking that kind of scenario soon.
what a load of rubbish. absolute garbage, he not only wants come back to anfield but wasn`t even speaking to rafa when he went to real madrid. lay journalism again i`m afraid
not a chance after what benitez done to him at LFC, remember he forced alonso out of the club by telling him he’s being sold to fund garath barry coming in
not a chance in the world alonso would play for benitez ever again

I hope you have learnt a valuable lesson from this, and that is do your research thoroughly before putting pen to paper or keyboard to webpage. You are not the first and wont be the last to make such a mistake. Unfortunately some of your older and supposedly more experienced peers still have not learnt this lesson. And one in particular stands out, namely Mr Kelvin Mackenzie. Good luck with your studies young man.
@ Billy norton it’s not that bad an article so they fell out , mourinho fell out with Ronaldo over insults made about the latter,s poor childhood and upbringing. Still working together.it’s the whisky swiggin lying jock nobody wants to sign for ,unless they,re scared of him like the f.a.
