Chelsea Transfers: 5 Signings That Could Catch United

3. Luka Modric

Another player who could help Chelsea get under United's skin and help them close the gap on the champions is Luka Modrid - another of the Red Devil's long-term transfer targets. Both Chelsea and United have had a long-standing interest in the Croatian midfielder and both outfits want to sign him from Real Madrid this summer. But it could be the Blues who have an obvious advantage in the race for his signature considering he and Mourinho forged a close relationship at the Bernabeu, and with the midfielder being voted one of the worst signing of the season in Spain recently, the ex-Spurs man may well welcome a return to these shores. Chelsea saw a huge £40 million offer for Modric rejected by his former club Tottenham in 2011 but they may stand a better chance of landing the star a second time round. Modric helped put United out of the Champions League earlier this year after Real Madrid knocked the Reds out of the last-16 stage. The Croatian netted the first goal in a 2-1 win at Old Trafford.
