Chelsea Transfers: Will Jose Mourinho Bid For Gareth Bale?

£100 million. Such a deal would shatter the world-transfer record of £80 million paid by Madrid to Manchester United for Cristiano Ronaldo in 2009. And there are only a handful of clubs who could afford to part with such a huge stack of cash. One of them are Chelsea. Blues' manager Jose Mourinho has revealed he tried to sign Bale last season, during his tenure as manager at the Bernabeu. And that previous interest could lead to the Portuguese boss making a cheeky attempt to usurp his former employers by landing the double PFA Player of the Year at Stamford Bridge. Bale would be a perfect acquisition for the West London club. They haven't won the Premier League since 2010 and clearly a player of such obvious talent could help them over the finishing line next season and blow all domestic competitors out of the water. Chelsea have had a striking crisis in the last two seasons, with Fernando Torres failing to live up to his huge £50 million price tag following his move from Liverpool. And Bale would get the goals flowing at the Bridge should he join, having managed 21 Premiership goals last season. The Blues are no strangers to breaking records. They smashed the British-transfer-record to land Torres - could they break the world-transfer-record to sign Bale? Bankrolled by Roman Abramovich's billions, there's certainly no reason why the Europa League winners can't try.
