David Beckham: 5 Reasons Why His Move To PSG Is Just A Marketing Ploy

5. It Isn't About The Football

beckham Paris Saint-Germain might be top of Ligue 1 at present, but do not be fooled, David Beckham's move to the French outfit is not one born out of footballing reasons; just as his decision to leave the world spotlight of the Bernebeu playing for one of the greatest teams in the land in 2007 wasn't based on a desire to be a success in the game. David Beckham left Real Madrid, where he won the La Liga title in his final season, so that he could move to the obscurity of the MLS. Not so he could chase silverware in America, but so he could make a heap of cash. A figure of $250 million in salary and commercial endorsements over the five years of his then-contract was reported, with his move worth a staggering $1 million a week. According to The Beckham Experiment by Grant Wahl, on the back of the strength of the signing and the media frenzy it created, LA Galaxy were able to pull off a new 5-year shirt sponsorship deal with Herbalife nutrition company worth $20 million. That's why LA Galaxy signed him, that's why Beckham moved to America, and that's why just like his PSG move, it isn't about the football. Source(s): Sports Illustrated
