Why We Should Be Excited About Formula E

03913803 070 We're all familiar with Formula 1 €“ fast cars, big names and a global appeal. F1 is the pinnacle of motor racing and has an international following of loyal fans. We all know of Lewis Hamilton, we can all point out a Ferrari, and most developed countries host a F1 race at some point in the year. But Formula 1 may be about to receive some competition, in the brand new racing series Formula E. Set to launch in September 2014, Formula E is a new motor racing world championship which has the backing of F1 governing body, the FIA (Federation Internationale de l'Automobile). Formula E takes the concept of Formula 1, and adds a twist. Where F1 cars are powered by fuel-guzzling V6 Turbo engines, Formula E will be powered exclusively by electric energy. The new all-electric engines have been developed by Renault and will feature innovative wireless-charging. Designed to appeal to a new generation of motor racing fans, Formula E will take place at ten locations all across the world, with a calendar running through the 2014/15 season. Formula E has the unique distinction of featuring only street circuits, and specialised tracks will be set up in major international cities. The calendar currently includes Beijing, Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aires, Miami, Berlin, Putrajaya, Punta del Este, Los Angeles, Monaco and importantly for a British audience, London. Venturi Main News What is more, Formula E has the backing of some major names. Hollywood actor Leonardo di Caprio is the latest, and perhaps biggest name to add his backing to the series. Di Caprio is co-founder of new team Venturi. Other teams confirmed for the 2014/15 Formula E world championship include Richard Branson's Virgin Racing, and German car manufacturer Audi, both of which add their motor racing histories to the new formula. For motor racing fans, the E.Dams team is headed by four-time F1 champion Alain Prost, whilst former F1 team Super Aguri will be making an unexpected comeback in 2014 as a Formula E entry. Formula E has a lot of potential, and will appeal to a vast majority of motor racing fans and newcomers alike. The series is scheduled to start in September 2014, but Formula E drivers are yet to be announced. Virgin Racing have stated they wish to have an F1 driver as their race driver, whilst former F1 racers Lucas di Grassi and Takuma Sato have already committed to the series as development drivers. Both BT Sport and Sky Sports are rumoured to be bidding to the rights to broadcast Formula E, meaning it is almost sure to have a large viewership. Car Gallery 16
