Former Barista Patrick Cummins Picks Up First UFC Win

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KwWN86xiED8 Former latte server and, unbelievably, UFC PPV co-headliner picks up his first win in the octagon. Patrick Cummins, best known as the barista from Orange County, CA who the UFC called upon as a last minute replacement to fight light heavyweight challenger and Olympian Daniel Cormier in a co-headlining match, has picked up his first win in the UFC at UFC Fight Night 42 in New Mexico. From coffee slinging to the cage, Cummins has probably had the most unbelievable year of any professional fighter, and has earned himself at least another fight or two in the UFC. If his first match was nothing but a squash match, being knocked out within the first minute and a half by a fighter with a legit claim to both a heavyweight title shot (which he will not take, as friend and training partner Cain Valasquez holds the belt) and light heavyweight title shot (where he'll have to wait for the outcome of Jones vs. Gustafsson 2), then his second match was probably the best he could have hoped for: a second round TKO of an undefeated fighter, a win that likely keeps him in the UFC for at least another fight or two. The fight was the only fight aired on the UFC Fight Pass portion of the show. Cummins was called upon earlier this year when Rashad Evans dropped out of a matchup with Cormier due to injury with only a week to go before their fight at UFC 170 back in February. With no viable replacement willing to step up and face the undefeated wrestler on short notice, Dana White jumped at the chance to sign and promote Cummins as a viable option - viable mostly because Cummins happened to have trained with Cormier back in his wrestling days. Cummins, a walk on for the Penn State wrestling team, also claimed to have once made Cormier cry during a training session. So while most MMA fans had to scratch their heads and wonder "who?" when Cummins' name was announced, the UFC began promoting him as an undefeated prospect (4-0 at the time) who no one wanted to fight. Oh, and there was that whole crying story, despite such incidents supposedly being off-limits due to the unwritten code of fighters and wrestlers. In reality, he was serving coffee, and pretty much won the lottery in the Cormier call-up. One can't fault Cummins for attempting to promote the hell out of the Cormier fight, a fight he had no real chance in. However, handed competition more on his level, Cummins made the most of the opportunity, finishing newcomer Roger Narvaez at 2:28 of the second round to hand him his first defeat. Cummins improves to 5-1, while Narvaez drops to 6-1. Who knows, should he show some development, maybe one day we'll be discussing Cummins vs. Cormier 2, without the obvious squash match connotations.
