Liverpool Considering Club Record Bid For Midfielder

Move over £35 million Andy Carroll...

Liverpool are considering a club record bid for Borussia Mönchengladbach midfielder Granit Xhaka, Bild are reporting. The German newspaper claims The Reds are one of many top European clubs that are interested in the Swiss international, who could leave Die Fohlen at the end of this season after four years at Borussia-Park. According to the report, the five-time European Cup winners are set to be charged what would be a club record £37 million for the player's services, trumping Andy Carroll's £35 million move back in 2011. Jurgen Klopp will be very familiar with the work of his first transfer target at Anfield, having managed in the Bundesliga for the entirety of Xhaka's career in Germany. Granit has been one of Monchengladbach's most important this season. The black and whites are currently fourth in the table, two points clear of Bayer Leverkusen with their number 34 having made 16 appearances so far this term, scoring three goals but also picking up three red cards. Xhaka could be Liverpool's second midfield signing so far this window after they completed the signing of 19-year-old Marko Grujic on Wednesday. However, the former Red Star Belgrade player will spend the remainder of this season back in Serbia. Should Liverpool go ahead and secure his signature, surely Xhaka would walk into a midfield consisting of Joe Allen and Lucas Leiva, with club captain Jordan Henderson currently struggling with a heel injury.
