talkSPORT are reporting that Liverpool are looking to scoop up Fiorentina wide-man Juan Manuel Vargas.
Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport has corroborated claims that the squad could finalise a deal with the defender within the next week. Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has been determined to build a prime team to ensure a top-four finish next season, and is apparently looking to bring in at least another three players.
With the likelihood of Alberto Aquiliani moving from Liverpool to Fiorentina, it seems likely that Vargas will move in the other direction if the right deal can be hammered out. The hope is that a mutual move will only help speed up negotiations.
Vargas would be an invaluable addition to Rodgers’ side, having spent the last six years playing in Italy, first for Catania, followed by a four-year stint at Fiorentina. At present, Liverpool relies on Spanish defender Jose Enrique, and though giving a solid performance in his first season with the club, he would benefit from some strong backup like Vargas, who would best operate down the left in both defensive and midfield capacity.
Vargas’ recruitment will also likely serve as a means of keeping former Aston Villa winger Stewart Downing alert and clear of complacency after a disappointing run last season. Vargas is reportedly enthusiastic to play in the Premier League.
