Ahead of yet another encounter with Manchester United’s fiercest of rivals, Liverpool, Sir Alex Ferguson remarked yesterday that he “couldn’t believe” his rivals were a whole 21 points behind his side in the Premier League.
Following United’s 2-1 victory at Old Trafford yesterday, which was Ferguson’s second win over his old foes this season following the same scoreline back at Anfield last year, Brendan Rodger’s men remain miles away from United and, simply put, do not look anything close to title challengers.
Liverpool have finished seventh, sixth and eighth in the Premier League in the last three seasons and it actually does feel like the twenty-three years that have passed since they last won what was then called the Football League First Division in 1990 following decades of dominance in England.
When Sir Alex Ferguson took over at Old Trafford he stated that it was his mission to “knock Liverpool off their perch”. Not only has he knocked them off their perch but he has kicked them out of the birdcage, too.
Under Brendan Rodgers, Liverpool are in a period of transition. Legends like Jamie Carragher and Steven Gerrard are now in the twilight of their long careers and new players like Daniel Sturridge and Jonjo Shelvey have been ushered in.
But Liverpool really do need to make a number of other signings if they are to once more overtake Man United as England’s number one football team.
Here’s five we had in mind.

Christian Ericson and Edinson Cavani? Dream on…. We’re never ever gonna get these two. Ericson is the cream world youth football being chased by the big twos in Spain and England. Not our team in 8th position 24 points behind. Cavani is at his peak and can easily win medals and the big paycheck from any of those four or PSG. Even Villa is willing to sit on the Barca bench than come to Liverpool. Our club is at the stage where we can only attract the second tier talents, still undiscovered talents like Sterling or, sad to say, scrape the oldies pile. And yet the best of the oldies still wouldn’t come to Liverpool.
The sad state of my club.
Yeah, I thought I’d try and put a positive spin on things – I mean Liverpool have at least been in talks with Cavani according to reports so anything could happen, and as for you not being able to attract Eriksen, I wouldn’t be so sure about that. Ajax are hardly a massive club either these days.
christian eriksen n edison cavani
we need a player like eriksen, players like quaresma, lorente and butland and a new talent like alex pearce and main key man sneider these players will bring liverpool not 4th place but ze 3rd place , c3 and fa cup if the owners will do zat they r too blind n reaaly careless type of thinking use your brain out there, BR must sign players like this if we want liverpool on top n conquer title nxt season ok thats obvious.
I THINK LIVERPOOL SHOULD GET THAT INCE AND GAMEIRO TO BUSTER THEIR SQUAD , AND THEY Should look 4 a good keeper who is more better pepe raina , someone like BUTLAND , EVEN Brad jones can keep well than Raina so he should bench pepe. And pepe should be sold out.
I don’t think Liverpool can realistic afford someone like Cavani. Would love to see it, but hasn’t he also been touted for top four teams too? Can’t see it, but would love him and Eriksen pull on the red shirt next year.

MATE SERIOUSLY? AGUERO AND TEVEZ? YOU MEAN ROONEY & VAN PERSIE, NOT FORGETTING JAVIER HERNANDEZ AND THE YOUNG DANNY WELBECK. THE MOST DEVESTATING STRIKE FORCE IN PREMIERE LEAGUE HISTORY RACKING UP A HISTORIC AMOUNT OF GOALS
If United could wilfred zaha plus one midfielder
To be honest. Pool need more than just a couple of good signings
