Liverpool Transfers: Klopp Targeting Matip, Rules Out 'Keeper Move

German based stopper following Marko Grujic to Anfield?

Having inherited a squad still arguably reeling from the departure of Luis Suarez (thanks to an improbable injury crisis and the long-term problem of Daniel Sturridge's availability, you'd be forgiven for thinking that Jurgen Klopp would want to get his first part season as Liverpool manager out of the way without further incident. That German has a striking crisis is well publicised - though that might be eased with Sturridge's impending return to action - but he has more holes in his squad that need to be plugged. The Reds leak too many goals for a legitimate contender for the Premier League and for all their attacking flair they lack a defensive midfielder. The latter issue may be dealt with long-term by the acquisition of Red Star's defensive midfield starlet Marko Grujic - who is currently undergoing a medical ahead of a permanent deal - and according to Sky Sports, Klopp is also targeting Joel Matip. The Schalke defender is out of contract in the summer and was linked heavily with Newcastle in the summer. Sky Sports state that there are at least two French sides in line before Liverpool for the 24-year-old's signing, but if they can pull the deal off he could be the firm addition to the backline that Liverpool have looked short of at times this season. Grujic meanwhile will head back on loan to Red Star for the rest of the season, before joining up with new parent club Liverpool in the summer after a deal reported by Sky Sports to be worth £5.1m goes through. If you haven't heard of him yet, expect big things, as he's been likened to Steven Gerrard by Serbian football journalist Vlastimir Stevanovic and shares football genetics with Nemanja Matic at Chelsea. Klopp also used his press conference ahead of Liverpool's match with Stoke City to shoot down talk of signing a new goalkeeper:
€œNo. Our goalkeeper situation is absolutely okay. Simon Mignolet is a really good goalkeeper.€
