Liverpool Transfers News: Rodgers To Swoop For Disgruntled Spur?

Liverpool have enquired over the availability of Tottenham playmaker and Icelandic international, Gylfi Sigurdsson, according to Caught Offside. Valued at somewhere in the vicinity of £10million, Sigurdsson could be just one of several new recruits to Merseyside in the January transfer window. Despite being amongst the highest scorers in the 2013 calendar year, Brendan Rodgers has made no secret of Liverpool's desire to expand their goal scoring prowess as he looks to introduce players who can provide assistance to the mercurial Luis Suarez. Why is this move a distinct possibility? First and foremost the money is there for Rodgers to spend. He has the complete backing from John Henry and his consortium and all agree that Liverpool needs to add to the squad in each of the upcoming windows. Secondly, Sigurdsson and Rodgers have history together and a reunion could definitely benefit both parties. Gylfi played under Brendan in the 2011/12 campaign when both were at Swansea City and, if it weren't for Tottenham swooping in at the final minute, Sigurdsson would have arrived on Anfield's doorstep with Rodgers. Brendan knew of the boy's talent when he worked with him in Wales and a replacement that can slip easily into his roaming front-three system is a must. Finally, Sigurdsson is hardly a monopoly at Spurs. He is just one of several signings Andre Villas-Boas made to play in an attacking three behind a lone striker and as a result had limited game time. Under Tim Sherwood he has hardly featured as with Sherwood came a 4-4-2 system limiting the number of positions on the field Gylfi could play. With Sherwood looking to recall Tom Carroll from a loan spell at QPR and a plethora of Spurs midfielders signing new contracts it is thought that the clubs technical director Franco Baldini could look to offload some midfield weight as he looks to bring in a new striker to White Hart Lane. Why would this be a shrewd signing? Of late we have seen the lack of depth that LFC have at their disposal. Failure signings of Victor Moses and Iago Aspas haven't helped Rodgers cause there and neither look like they will be on the books at Liverpool at seasons end. Turning to 19-year-old Australian Brad Smith to make his debut against Chelsea at the bridge is testament to the thin squad Rodgers has to tinker with. Sigurdsson is in his third season of top-flight English football and is very adept at creating chances that a player like Suarez will thrive on latching onto. It is also understood that the Liverpool's pursuit of Mohammad Salah from FC Basle will not affect their interest in Sigurdsson as they look to produce a squad worthy of European football yet again.
