Liverpool's 10 Greatest Champions League Victories

10. Liverpool 2-0 Roma (2002)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jITCtIiML3I An emotional evening back in March 2002 saw Gerard Houllier return to Anfield for the first time in six months, following heart surgery. With Phil Thompson in temporary charge, Liverpool needed a two-goal victory against Roma, and hope that the other group game between Galatasaray and Barcelona went their way, in order to qualify for the quarter-finals. It turned out to be a fantastic evening for the Reds, who were in the Champions League for the first time that season. They got off to a dream start, as Jari Litmanen stroked home a sixth-minute penalty following a foul by Marcos Assuncao on Danny Murphy. Anfield was electric, and with Houllier sat watching, there was an element of fate about the match. You just never really felt Liverpool would do anything other than qualify for the last-eight. The game ebbed and flowed, and midway through the second-half, Emile Heskey powered home a header to get the Reds' all-important second goal. They saw the game out, and Barca's 1-0 win in Turkey ensured they reached the next stage. They would eventually lose to Bayer Leverkusen in the quarter-finals, having completely blown a winning position in the second-leg in Germany, but that wonderful night against Roma lives long in the memory.
