Man City: 5 Reasons Mancini Has Failed This Season

5. Elimination From Europe

Champions League When Manchester City won the Premier League title with practically the last kick of the season, morale was high. It was viewed as the culmination of club owner Sheikh Mansour's expensive mission to transform the club into one capable of winning the league and the beginning of his mission to transform them into one that could compete in Europe. Following domestic glory, City turned their attentions to this seasons Champions League, but their campaign never even got out of the starting blocks as they finished bottom of the table behind Ajax, Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund. Failure in Europe was a demoralising reality check for Roberto Mancini's men and was further evidence that this current team aren't good enough to sit at the high table of Europe. At a glance, expulsion from the Champions League and failure to quality for its second-tier competition appeared to be a blessing in disguise for City - while rivals United were out contesting matches abroad on a Wednesday night, they could recuperate and use their extra days off to their advantage in the title race. However, what has happened instead is that the confidence of City's players has flat-lined and seeped into their domestic performances.
