If anybody in the Man City camp was worried that they were being replaced, then they needn’t have been. Except Jesus Navas - he has every right. Nolito, signed from Celta Vigo for £14 million, is a fast, pacey winger of a similar age - indeed he is just 11 months younger than his compatriot. The Spanish wingers even look like each other. That, however, is where the similarities end.

In Nolito’s last 100 appearances he has bagged 39 goals. Navas, by stark contrast, has netted just the paltry four in his last 135. Nolito’s late emergence on the international scene essentially spelt the end of Navas’ Spain career, and so it would appear to be the case at domestic level too.

For years, City fans have lamented Navas' lack of end product following lung-busting drives up and down the flanks. Nolito is a far more direct option whose goals will take the burden somewhat off the likes of Sergio Aguero and Kevin de Bruyne.

If Navas is booted out of the club, he should be commended for shaking off the chronic homesickness that plagued him for so many years and which denied him moves away from his native Seville.
