Man United Transfers: 4 Replacements For Rio Ferdinand

In terms of transfer activity it has been a summer of frustration for Manchester United and new manager David Moyes, with no major signings coming through. Coupled with Wayne Rooney's declaration of being €œangry and confused€, it seems as if the likeliest movement inside the doors of Carrington, is out.

Although many will say that a new centre back isn't of immediate priority, I feel there needs to be investment in this area in the next couple of years.

Firstly, Nemanja Vidic has been blighted by injuries in the last two seasons and appearances have been more sporadic, thus opening up a potential problem. In addition, at 32 years of age, he may lack the strength to ride another serious injury again.

However a more apparent and worrying thought for United fans is €œwhat does the future have in store for Rio Ferdinand?". Ferdinand seems to be plagued by a back problems right now and is slowing up. Sometimes this can be exposed by pacier opposition players (Gareth Bale at Old Trafford last year), where once in that department he was near unbeatable. The apparent fading of his powers may lead him to realise that his time as a Man United player is dissipating and he may call time on his career.

Hence why the subject of this article is focused on the latter player and who replaces him.

It falls squarely on the shoulders of Moyes and the United board to find someone to step up and replace a club stalwart of 11 years, noted for his immense reading of the game, pace (when he had it!), commitment and his contribution to 6 title winning season (and 1,311 minutes of not conceding a League goal which was achieved in the 2008-09 season).

On the one hand, successors can be found within with the likes of Johnny Evans, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones, and possibly for the long term Scott Wotton. However, despite these potential option, Moyes wants to purchase experience and proven centre backs from elsewhere in the footballing universe.

Here, I suggest 4 players for that very job.
