The Portuguese was brandished a straight red card following a collision with defender Alvaro Arbeloa and manager Sir Alex Ferguson was so enraged by the decision that he remonstrated with officials on the touchline before refusing to speak to the media in the immediate aftermath. The decision to dismiss Nani left United with a mountain to climb against Real and they were ultimately put to the sword by the reigning Spanish Champions, a victory of which Jose Mourinho conceded should not have happened. Fans and players alike were stunned by the red card, even Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany stated on micro-social networking site Twitter that it was "never a red card".
