According to The Sun, Manchester United are preparing to splash £9 million on St Etienne defender Kurt Zouma.
The 17-year-old centre back played 22 league games for the Ligue 1 side last season and managed to bag two goals in the process.
As we wrote in our match report from United’s 3-2 win against Fulham on Saturday, the Red Devils do currently have injury problems in defence which has led Sir Alex Ferguson to play midfielder Michael Carrick at the back for the first two games of this year’s Premier League campaign.
United do however have depth in that position when everybody is fit with Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic, Patrice Evra, Alexander Buttner and Rafael all vying for places, which does make it odd how Sir Alex is reportedly in search for another defender.
Sir Alex Ferguson has already added youth this season with the addition of 18-year-old Nick Powell from Crewe, who is seen as a star for the future. If Sir Alex does sign Zouma it would take Manchetser United’s total spending this summer to well over £50 million which is more than three times that of rivals and champions Manchester City.

Patrice Evra, Alexander Buttner and Rafael are all wing backs and are certainly not “vying for places” as a centre half?
Phil Jones is not competent enough for my liking at the centre of defence and operates better as a defensive midfielder.
That leaves Smalling, Vidic and an aging Ferdinand, fighting it out for the two centre back positions.
Not enough for a heavy season of fixtures.
