Man Utd Transfer News: Phelan Suggests Wayne Rooney Wants A New Challenge

BBC Radio 5 Live, former Manchester United Assistant Manager Mike Phelan has suggested that unhappy striker Wayne Rooney may want a new challenge and could leave Old Trafford this summer. With fresh rumours that newly appointed Red Devils boss, David Moyes, is set to hold talks with Rooney this week, Phelan has shocked fans by stating that Rooney may still want to leave the club. Phelan said:

"Wayne is at the greatest club you can be at. Why would you want to jeopardise that, unless you want a fresh challenge and you feel that challenge isn't being met at Manchester United."
Ever since the England international veteran handed in his second transfer request in three years, reports have suggested that the 27-year-old's days at United could be numbered. Rooney joined Manchester United as a promising 17-year-old and made himself a key man in the United set-up from the get-go. However, since the arrival of Robin van Persie last summer, Rooney has been frustrated at not always being the first choice. His poor form last season was a constant problem between United€™s number ten and former manager Sir Alex Ferguson. With tensions rising, Ferguson and Rooney€™s relationship seemed to be non-existent by the end of the season, with Rooney receiving minimal affection from Sir Alex at United€™s 20th League title celebration. The striker has been heavily linked with a move away from Old Trafford with London being the most likely destination. With Chelsea and Arsenal both rumoured to be interested in the player, Rooney could chose to move to a London club rather than jetting to Ligue 1 champions, Paris Saint-Germain, who are also in the race.
