Before being dropped on Tuesday night most people would have laughed if you’d suggested Wayne Rooney would be on his way out of Old Trafford in the summer. However, reports in many newspapers today are claiming the England star could be on his way out of Old Trafford with The Sun leading the way with a world exclusive, saying Rooney could leave for as little as £25 million.

The article could cause a few nervous glances in Manchester as Rooney is still classed as one of their key players – hence the response to his being dropped against Real Madrid. However recent months have seen deterioration in his form as he has struggled to get out of RVP’s shadow.

As the Sun state, two and a half years ago Rooney tried to force a move through to get out of Old Trafford over a perceived lack of ambition, but he eventually gave in. Since then though things haven’t been the same, and the Sun suggest that this time it looks like the club think Rooney has had his day at Old Trafford.

If Rooney was as important as he was 12 months ago he would never have been dropped for the huge clash against Real Madrid, whether for tactical reasons or not. More shockingly, Manchester United didn’t seem to miss him, with Danny Welbeck playing a key role in the game, despite his team’s loss.

The article reports that Fergie now see’s Welbeck as the man to partner Van Persie. It remains to be seen though what comes of this and how being dropped on Tuesday will strain the relationship between Ferguson and Rooney.

£25 million isn’t really that much in modern day terms and does this show how far Rooney has dropped in Ferguson’s estimates?

Do you think Sir Alex would be right to let Rooney go? If he goes where could Rooney end up?  Would you like him at your club?
