Man Utd Transfer News: Wayne Rooney Has To Hand In Transfer Request To Leave

Daily Mail. The England international's future at Old Trafford was still up in the air as he arrived at the club's Carrington training centre yesterday morning, and it is understood he did not hold talks with David Moyes about his situation as planned. Those talks could take place today. The two men did speak on Wednesday but not for long and the Premier League Champion's stance on the matter is unchanged - he is not for sale. The Red Devils knocked back a speculative enquiry from Arsenal last week, and have thus far had no contact from any of the few clubs who could actually afford to sign him. With Rooney still thought to be unhappy by the fact that he was played out of position last season, benched for key games and had his fitness levels questioned by former manager Sir Alex Ferguson, the only way the 27-year-old's situation will change is if he forces the issue himself. That would mean handing in a written transfer request, which would in effect forfeit any money owed on the two remaining years of his £250,000-a-week contract. Rooney has always denied that he has already put in an official transfer request to leave. If the ex-Everton man does stay, the issue of a new contract could be problematic. With two years left on his deal, he will have to sign a new one by the halfway point of next season if United want to protect his value in the transfer market. It is also unlikely he will be offered the same lucrative terms he currently receives.
