Man Utd Transfers: £10m Stefan De Vrij To Replace Vidic

Could Holland's stopper become Van Gaal's first signing?

It was always likely to happen wasn't it? Van Gaal ends his tenure with the Netherlands national team at the World Cup and then an influx of Dutch players are linked to Manchester United the minute he steps into the role at Old Trafford. The latest player to be connected with joining the imposing manager's new club is the impressive 22-year old Stefan De Vrij from Feyenoord for a reported fee of £10m. De Vrij, who started every game for Van Gaal in Brazil and also scored in their famous victory over Spain, could be the perfect replacement for former captain Nemanja Vidic as Manchester United begin their new assault to get back into the Champions League this season. The young centre back scored four goals for Feyenoord last season and could relish a role in the Premier league possibly alongside Mats Hummels, who has also been strongly linked since the World Cup ended earlier this month. The Dutch stopper loves a tackle and was also voted alongside Arjen Robben in the Team of the Tournament. One thing for certain is that Van Gaal should have identified that replacing Ferdinand and Vidic with a solid spine in the heart of defence is crucial for United's progress in the new season, after the side were uncharacteristically leaky last term. It has also been reported that Lazio have made a bid for De Vrij but he could be persuaded by the influential Van Gaal to enhance his already impressive career, even without the promise of immediate European football (which might just be United's strongest ticket to top four challenging next year).
