Man Utd Transfers: 5 Players Fergie Must Buy in January

2. Leighton Baines

According to the Metro, the Everton left-back was all but certain to join United in the summer, with Sir Alex reportedly placing him at the top of his shopping list, but the move ultimately didn€™t transpire, with Baines himself telling the same outlet that he had heard nothing about a proposed transfer to Old Trafford. United do have recognised left-backs at the club in the shape of Patrice Evra and the recently signed Alexander Buttner, but with Evra€™s form having rapidly declined in the past couple of seasons, and Buttner still an untested entity in the Premier League, United need a left-back that can provide pace and protection within the back four, and Baines can certainly provide this in abundance. A regular for Everton, the 27-year-old has impressed many over the last few seasons with his performances, displaying both tough tackling and a genuine intelligence for the game. His assist rate at Everton is extremely impressive, and the position of left-back has contributed little attacking prowess and a lot of defensive frailty in the last couple of seasons. Couple this with his deadly set-piece delivery, and you have a player that is ready-made for Manchester United. (Note: I am aware that Fabio Da Silva is a recognised left-back at United, but seeing as though he is on a season-long loan with Queen€™s Park Rangers, if both Evra and Buttner were to find themselves sidelined with long-term injuries, United would be without any cover on the left.)
