Man Utd Transfers: 7 Reasons Why Gareth Bale Will Join In The Summer

7. Real Madrid's Galacticos Policy

Real Madrid is a club who pride themselves on having the world€™s best on their books. They dominated Europe in the 1950s due to such superstar names as Ferenc Puskas and Alfredo Di Stefano, and in the early noughties president Florentino Perez decided to replicate this policy. Over the course of three years they spent exorbitant sums on the likes of Luis Figo, Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldo, and David Beckham. As well as initial success on the pitch (winning La Liga twice and the Champions League once during this period), Real€™s Galacticos policy led to a marked increase in the club€™s global marketing revenue. Fast forward to 2008/2009, and after a spell out in the wilderness, Perez returned as president, bringing with him a new Galacticos era. Within the same summer he broke the world transfer record twice, firstly with the acquisition of Brazilian Kaka from AC Milan, closely followed by Manchester United€™s Cristiano Ronaldo. Other signings, such as Lyon€™s Kairm Benzema and Benfica€™s Angel Di Maria, helped smooth the transition to a new Galacticos era. And after a successful world cup with Colombia in 2014, Monaco€™s James Rodriguez became the latest in a long line of superstar signings. Nobody ever called it a sensible transfer policy. With each passing season players previously integral to the club€™s on-the-field success is shipped out to make way for new signings. Mesut Ozil was sacrificed for Bale, Angel Di Maria for James Rodriguez. It would therefore make sense for Real Madrid to sacrifice an underperforming Bale to make way for their latest shiny new toy. It wouldn€™t be a surprise to see Borussia Dortmund star Marco Reus to line up in a white kit come the new season.
