Man Utd Transfers: Giggs Wanted To Keep Rio Ferdinand

New QPR signing had a future at Old Trafford - as long as Ryan Giggs was boss...

Rio Ferdinand would still be a key Manchester United player if Ryan Giggs had managed to miraculously bag the manager position at Old Trafford. It has been revealed that Giggs, who became interim manager for the final few games of a tumultuous season for United under David Moyes, would have offered the defender a new contract had he been given the job permanently. Instead, Rio has joined Harry Redknapp at Queens Park Rangers - the man who gave him his first team chance at West Ham United 18 years ago. €œRio is a top-class guy €“ anyone who has watched the TV over the World Cup would see what a world-class act he is, on and off the field,€ said Redknapp. "He€™s a great role model. I signed him as a 14-year-old, so I know him as well as anyone and I€™m just so pleased to have him at the club. €œI spoke to Ryan Giggs to ask how much training he was doing and how fit he was and Ryan told me that, if he€™d been manager at Old Trafford this season, he would€™ve still been his No.1 centre-half." Meanwhile, Giggs will have to make do with listening to his boss Louis Van Gaal, who has taken over the reigns at Old Trafford following Moyes' malfunction, and who clearly didn't rate Ferdinand as an ongoing option. Ferdinand has joined QPR on a one-year deal, ending a 12-year career at Manchester United where he earned numerous club and personal accolades, but the question remains: at 35 years old, does the former England captain still have the ability he once possessed? Redknapp will be hoping so, as his QPR side are looking at the daunting task of staying afloat in the Premier League again following their promotion from the Championship. Sure, Rio has great leadership qualities, but it counts for nothing when combined with old legs, as Sol Campbell proved during his ill-fated time at Newcastle United. What do you think of this news? Is Ryan Giggs right?
