Manchester United's Wayne Rooney is on the verge of sealing a move back to Everton, according to BBC Sport's Simon Stone.

It is reported that the England skipper, who left Goodison Park in 2004 for close to £30m, will join the Toffees on a free transfer, with United prepared to waive any fee in order to push through a deal.

Despite eclipsing Bobby Charlton's goal-scoring record earlier in the year, Rooney saw his role at Old Trafford demoted to that of substitute last season, after incoming manager Jose Mourinho looked to build his side around Zlatan Ibrahimovic instead.

And despite the Swede's departure this summer, the 31-year-old has found himself surplus to requirements - the culmination of a turgid run of seasons which has seen his value plummet.

The move, expected to be completed in the coming days, could also pave the way for Everton's Romelu Lukaku to head in the opposite direction, as United look to finally hone in on a new front-man after a thus-far frustrating summer transfer window.

Everton fans, whose response to the news of Rooney's return has been decidedly mixed, will be hoping their new acquisition - alongside the likes of Sandro Ramirez and Davy Klaassen - can contribute some of the goals to fill the Belgian's shoes.
