Man Utd Must Break Transfer Record For Gonzalo Higuain

But will the Red Devils splash the cash to beat the race for his signature?

Manchester United have been told they must break their transfer record if they want Napoli's Argentine international Gonzalo Higuain to be playing at Old Trafford next season. Sky Sports claim the Italian club have insisted that the striker will only leave Stadio San Paolo if his £72m buyout clause is met after The Red Devils and Arsenal were linked with his signature. If Louis Van Gaal was to successfully sign the former-Real Madrid star, he would have to top last year's investment of £59.7m on Angel Di Maria, a deal that would take up a significant percentage of Dutchman's summer transfer-budget.
The Red Devils boss is looking to add to his attacking options ahead of his team's return to the Champions League, with concerns involving Robin van Persie's future and the departure of Radamel Falcao. A chance of playing in Europe's biggest competition is sure to be a matter that may interest Higuain, who could only help his side finish 5th in Serie A last term which mean they missed out on a top three qualification and Champions League football. United will have to beat rivals Arsenal if they are to bring in the South American, who has been linked with the Gunners more than once in recent years. However, Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis isn't looking to lose a player who netted 18 goals and assisted seven more in 37 league appearances last season on the cheap, with the goal-scorer still contracted for another three seasons in Italy. Higuain moved from Real Madrid, where he scored 122 in 264 appearances, in the summer of 2013 and has gone on to bag 53 in 102 for his current club. Atletico Madrid are also keen on bringing the wanted goalscorer, who is currently on international duty with Argentina at the Copa America.
