McClaren Insists Newcastle "Mean Business" - And Doesn't Rule Out Further Signings
NUFC boss Steve McClaren says he will "assess" his squad during the opening weeks of the season.
Newcastle United head coach Steve McClaren insists the Magpies "mean business" this season - and has not ruled out strengthening his squad further once he assesses his players after the "first few games". The ex-England boss spoke at his first pre-match Barclays Premier League press conference as Newcastle head coach on Thursday ahead of Southampton's visit to St James' Park on Sunday (1.30pm kick-off). While explaining that his squad's "attitude and work" has been good, McClaren did not rule out potentially heading back into the transfer market if he decides Newcastle still need to strengthen once he judges them during the first few Premier League games. 
"I'm pleased with the work we've done, the squad and their attitude. We'll only know if we're ready (for the start of the season) on Sunday when the game begins. "We mean business, irrespective of what happens on Sunday - we've stated that from day one. It's a long season and that starts (on) Sunday. "We're still looking and people will assess what they have after the first few games."In terms of personnel for the Saints game, McClaren admitted he had "decisions" to make regarding both Aleksandar Mitrovic and Chancel Mbemba's match fitness. Also praising his Southampton counterpart Ronald Koeman, McClaren continued:
"I've still got decisions to make regarding Aleksandar Mitrovic and Chancel Mbemba (and whether or not they'll start). "Ronald Koeman has done a great job at Southampton. They were the surprise package of the Premier League last year.
