Newcastle "Close" To Two Big Signings - And Want Three More On Top Of That

McClaren claims NUFC are closing in on their targets.

Newcastle United are "close" to signing one or two players, according to Magpies head coach Steve McClaren - who has also requested "patience" from the club's supporters once more. The Toon boss claims that the club are making progress in the transfer market and hope to complete a couple of signings soon, adding that they want to recruit "four or five" players in all this summer. With Crystal Palace close to completing the acquisition of former Magpie Yohan Cabaye from Paris Saint-Germain, that will leave Newcastle as the only Premier League side yet to make a signing.
However, McClaren confirmed to BBC Newcastle that two NUFC deals are close to completion - with the Magpies known to be pursuing both PSV Eindhoven midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum and Schalke 04 defender Joel Matip, as well as Anderlecht forward Aleksandar Mitrovic. BBC Newcastle tweeted on Wednesday:
"#nufc head coach Steve McClaren says the club is close on getting 1 or 2 players but again says they need patience to get the right ones. "nufc head coach Steve McClaren says they have identified around 4 or 5 players they would like to get."
https://twitter.com/bbcnewcastle/status/619143743132803072 https://twitter.com/bbcnewcastle/status/619143824972075008 McClaren would like to bring in at least one player before the Magpies fly out to the USA for their pre-season tour this weekend - and it is believed that the four or five that have been identified does not include Northampton Town youngster Ivan Toney. Toney is seen as a player who can fit into their development side, for who Newcastle also want a couple of additions.
