Newcastle Draw Northampton Town In Capital One Cup Second Round

Will McClaren lead the Magpies to glory this year?

Newcastle United have been drawn at home in the second round of the Capital One Cup against Northampton Town - less than two weeks after Ivan Toney signed for the North East side. The Cobblers will head to Tyneside having hammered Blackpool 3-0 in the first round, and Toney could potentially line-up against his former side. The Magpies were ball No 13 of the seeded teams in the draw, and they will play their second-round tie in the week commencing August 24th.
Last season, Newcastle memorably knocked holders Manchester City out of the League Cup at The Etihad before eventually being humbled 4-0 by Tottenham Hotspur in the quarter-finals at White Hart Lane in December. In the seven years before last season the Magpies had failed to get past the fourth round even once in a competition they have historically struggled to make any sort of impact in. The only time Newcastle have ever reached the League Cup final was all the way back in 1976, when they succumbed to Man City 2-1. However, Steve McClaren, who won this competition with Middlesbrough in 2004, has promised to take the cup competitions seriously this season in a bid to meet his target of a top-eight finish in the Barclays Premier League - as well as claiming a trophy.
