Newcastle Edging Closer To Breaking Transfer Duck With £14m Signing

Everton have joined the race - but the Magpies are confident a deal can be done.

Newcastle United are confident they will complete the signing of Georginio Wijnaldum imminently - despite Everton attempting to hijack the move at the final hour. The Chronicle report that Magpies managing director Lee Charnley flew across to Holland on Tuesday and held "serious" discussions with PSV Eindhoven officials about a transfer. Interestingly, Dutch paper De Telegraaf published two separate articles on Wijnaldum on Wednesday - one claiming that Everton were trying to sign the attacking-midfielder, the other suggesting the Magpies were close to agreeing a £14 million (‚20 million) deal for the Dutch international and that he could sign on the dotted line within 24 hours.
The news outlet also claim that Newcastle will pay Wijnaldum upwards of £40,000 a week, although whatculture.com/nufc understands that the Magpies would be willing to offer anywhere up to £60,000 a week to secure his signature. Wijnaldum is unlikely to travel to PSV's training base in Switzerland on Thursday as he edges closer to a move to Tyneside. Sunderland, Manchester United, Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain had all previously been credited with an interest. The midfielder has already been capped 18 times by Holland, scoring twice, and is regarded as one of the most-promising players in Europe due to the fact he has a habit of regularly finding the back of the net. Furthermore, the 24-year-old has already won three trophies with PSV and has made 152 appearances, scoring an impressive 56 times from midfield and contributing 23 assists, since moving there from Feyenoord in 2011. The midfielder also netted for Holland during the 3-0 third-place play-off win over Brazil at last year€™s World Cup.
