Newcastle Midfielder Feels The Club Can Win A Trophy This Season

Georginio Wijnaldum thinks the club has recruited well this summer.

Newcastle United midfielder, Georginio Wijnaldum thinks his new club should be aiming to win a trophy this season, according to the Chronicle.

The former PSV Eindhoven captain is happy with the business that the Magpies have carried out during the summer and thinks the squad is developing well under new boss, Steve McClaren.

Wijnaldum was the first signing of McClaren's era at St James' Park and has looked impressive during the opening games of the 2015/16 season alongside fellow new recruits Chancel Mbemba, Florian Thauvin and Aleksandar Mitrovic.

The midfielder scored his first goal for the club in front of the Gallowgate End against Southampton where Newcastle drew 2-2 with the Saints.

Speaking to the Evening Chronicle, the 24-year-old seems happy with the squad and remains ambitious about the season ahead:

He said:

€œWe have good players but now we must make sure we show we are a good team

€œWhen a lot of players come to a club it can be difficult to gel because you don€™t know each other properly.

€œHowever, we are going train hard to make sure we do know each other. Then we can be a big team going forward.

€œWe are focused on everything. You have to have confidence going forward and feel you can win a trophy. We have that chance here."

Newcastle United take on West Ham at the Boleyn Ground in their next game after the international break and McClaren and Wijnaldum will be desperate to secure their first three points of the season.
