Newcastle Midfielder Given One Last Chance To Save Toon Career

Steve McClaren will give Ferguson the opportunity to prove himself.

Steve McClaren will give Shane Ferguson one final chance to resurrect his Newcastle United career this season. The 23-year-old utility player has been in the Magpies wilderness for several seasons now but McClaren will give him the opportunity to prove his worth on Tyneside. According to The Chronicle, Newcastle's new head coach is determined to give every single member of his squad the opportunity to start their Magpies career from scratch.
Interestingly, the paper also claim that Cambridge United had shown an interest in taking Ferguson on loan in 2015-16, only for Mcclaren to block any potential move. Ferguson, capped 18 times by Northern Ireland to date, can play as either a left-back or a left-winger but his slight frame has seen him struggle to cope with the physicality of the Premier League. At 5ft 10in, he is not small but he has failed to add much muscle since he first made his Newcastle debut back in 2009. To date, Ferguson has played 32 times for the Magpies without scoring, and he has enjoyed loan spells at both Birmingham City (twice, in 2012-13 and then 2013-14), as well as at Rangers last season.
