Newcastle Striker Set For Surgery - But Two Magpies Close To Return

Will Riviere's injury force the Magpies back into the transfer market?

Emmanuel Riviere is likely to face surgery on his injured knee in the coming weeks as Newcastle United head coach Steve McClaren faces somewhat of a mini striking crisis. McClaren still has Aleksandar Mitrovic, Papiss Cisse and Ayoze Perez at his disposal but, should Riviere face a lengthy spell on the sidelines, then Newcastle could be forced to head into the transfer market in order to bolster his ranks. Young forward Adam Armstrong is currently on loan at League One Coventry City until January - and he netted twice during his debut against Wigan Athletic on Saturday - so the Magpies may decide they do need to add greater cover to their forward line.
Speaking after Newcastle's 2-2 draw with Southampton, McClaren told The Chronicle:
"I think Manu Riviere€™s knee was painful after training. €œSo he might have to have surgery - we are investigating that."
Riviere, who scored three times in 28 games across all competitions last season, has damaged his meniscus and that could rule him out for an extended period. Despite the potential loss of Riviere, Newcastle have been handed a double boost in the fitness department - with both playmaker Remy Cabella and Paul Dummett having returned to full training. Although neither will be considered for the Magpies' trip to Swansea City on Saturday, the duo are looking to return to action before the end of the month. McClaren continued:
"Dummy will train this week and Remy Cabella."
