Alan Pardew wants to reunite with Jonjo Shelvey this summer by bringing the Swansea playmaker to Newcastle to fill the void left by Yohan Cabaye, according to the Mirror. It was Pardew who gave a then 16-year-old Shelvey his professional debut in April 2008 when he was manager at Charlton and the Magpies boss is eager to work with the 22-year-old again. The Magpies have been in dire need of a creative midfielder following Cabaye's £19-million switch to Paris Saint Germain in the final days of the January transfer window and Pardew views Shelvey as the ideal replacement for the French international, who was an immensely popular figure on Tyneside. Shelvey only joined Swansea last summer in a £5m deal from Liverpool but has been one of the few beacons of consistency in a poor campaign for the South Wales club, weighing in with six goals and as many assists in 30 appearances. His latest strike, an unbelievable volley from the centre circle during Saturday's 4-1 win against Aston Villa, is a serious contender for Goal of the Season and exactly the type of flair and ingenuity that Pardew should be looking to inject into his squad for next season. Whether Mike Ashley chooses to loosen the pursestrings at St James' Park and give Pardew room to manoeuvre in the transfer market is another question entirely, with Shelvey likely to cost upwards of £10m should Newcastle choose to pursue his signature. But after two barren transfer windows and with Hatem Ben Arfa likely to be jettisoned in the summer, Ashley owes it to the supporters to provide the funds for a major squad overhaul and finally deliver the long-awaited replacement for Cabaye.
