Newcastle Transfer News: Stewart Downing £5 Million Interest?

Liverpool Echo. The winger's representatives have been contacted by the Magpies, who have confirmed their interest and have enquired if the 29-year-old is keen on a move to St James' Park. Downing, who cost Liverpool £20 million from Aston Villa two seasons ago, has asked for some time to consider his options. The former Middlesbrough man initially had no intentions of leaving the Anfield club having been reassured in pre-season by manager Brendan Rodgers that he remained part of his plans. However, Newcastle are now expected to enter talks for the player after it was revealed Liverpool are reciprocal to a sale. While Downing has featured in three of the Red's pre-season games this summer, he has been an unused substitute in the last two, against Thailand and Olympiacos, with Philippe Coutinho, Iago Aspas, Raheem Sterling and Jordon Ibe selected ahead of him in the wide areas. And Newcastle could pounce and make another cut-price purchase, having recently signed QPR striker Loic Remy on a season loan. Downing would fit in well at the North East club, who have concerns over Hatem Ben Arfa. The France international has struggled for fitness and form after breaking his tibia and fibula in his left leg three years ago, and only made 19 Premier League appearances last season.
