5. Sunderland 2-2 Newcastle United February 5th 2000

KEVIN pHILLIPS The first ever Tyne and Wear derby at The Stadium of Light is also the first on our list. Newcastle raced in to a 2-0 lead with defender Didier Domi having his shot deflected off Niall Quinn and in to the net on 11 minutes before the on loan Helder doubled the lead on 21 minutes. However just minutes later, Kevin Phillips shot Sunderland back in to the match and made it 2-1. Sunderland pressed and pressed from there with Harper making some superb saves in the Newcastle goal. The second half in particular, Sunderland pushed on with Newcastle unable to get forward with any real conviction. In the 83rd minute, Geordie hearts were broken. Phillips again, scoring from close range to make it 2-2. Newcastle fans protested in vein as the goal appeared to be offside but any replays were inconclusive. The match may have ended level but all the bragging rights were on Wearside as Newcastle threw away the two goal lead. Sunderland revelled in the collapse of their local rivals and this completed an undefeated season for Sunderland against their local rivals.
