Newcastle Youngster "Wants More" Now He's "Had A Taste" Of First-Team Action

Newcastle United's summer signing Ivan Toney admitted it was "amazing" to make his Magpies debut against his former club Northampton Town - and admitted he wants "more and more" opportunities going forward. The 19-year-old forward came on as a 78th-minute substitute during the Magpies' 4-1 Capital One Cup Second-Round victory over the Cobblers at St James' Park on Tuesday night, having been given a place on the bench due to the fact Papiss Cisse was suffering from a sickness. Toney did not really get much of a chance to attack and had just one potshot on goal, yet the forward who netted 10 times last season was still overjoyed at having made his St James' Park bow.

Speaking to NUFC.co.uk following his Toon debut, Toney said:

"It was amazing, really, making my debut against the team that made me. "To be honest, I didn't think I was going to get on because there were a few other players in front of me, but I'm happy that the manager gave me my chance and I thought I did well. "We were 4-1 up when I came on so (Steve McClaren) just said: 'Keep it nice and tight and do what you can do.' "Sometimes you've just got to keep the ball if you're winning, rather than go forward. "Even though I wanted to score as much as ever, the chance wasn't really there so you can't force it. "Now I've had a taste, I want more and more. I'm sure the manager will bring me back in when he thinks I'm ready again."

Toney is expected to spend the majority of the campaign as part of the Magpies' development squad, rather than as a first teamer - although he could force his way into McClaren's short-term plans if he impresses, just as Ayoze Perez did last season.
