NFL 2018 Week 2 Review - 7 Points & Plays Everyone Is Talking About

5. The Birth Of A New Star

Patrick Mahomes burst onto the scene in Week 1, taking everybody in the NFL by surprise with an incredible performance, throwing for 256 yards and a total of 4 touchdowns. A buzz has started to build around the unproven quarterback. The Chiefs felt confident enough in Mahomes progression and ability that they released the ever reliable Alex Smith. They must have known something the general public did not.

Coming up against an astute Pittsburgh defence in Week 2 appeared to be a reality check for Mahomes, with a more grounded approach expected of the youngster. Mahomes proceeded to throw six touchdown passes and broke every rookie record that stood. These figures were simply staggering. The hype is real. Patrick Mahomes could be an absolute superstar.

Mahomes’ accuracy and arm power is like no other and plays with a cool demeanour as if he was a seasoned veteran. When the Chiefs decided to move on from Alex Smith’s safe and conservative approach, they clearly expected big things from Mahomes and in short, he has delivered. What’s more interesting is the touchdown passes went to five different receivers, showing it is not just a matter of finding Tyreek Hill and letting him run.

If Mahomes can carry on with this form and standard of play, he could be an early candidate for MVP. Similarly, if the Chiefs can outscore opponents like they have in Week 1 and 2, they could be looking at a very deep playoff run.
