Manchester City could welcome back striker Sergio Aguero for their trip to the Bernabeu. The Argentinian has been out for a month with a knee injury but the clubs leading goalscorer in Europe last season could feature against the Spanish Champions.
Gareth Barry is also back in action. The midfielder featured for the first time this season as a substitute in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Stoke having recovered from an abdominal injury.
Right back Micah Richard’s is still out with an ankle injury, which means new signing Maicon could be handed his European debut for his new club having already made his Premier League bow against Stoke.
Real Madrid have no fresh injury concerns, but the reported unhappiness of key player Cristiano Ronaldo is making waves in the press both home and abroad. The alleged dissatisfaction of the former Manchester United ace has coincided with Madrid’s disastrous domestic campaign so far this season – they have already lost just as many games this season (2) than they did for the entirety of last, and are now eight points behind leaders Barcelona having already lost to Getafe and then Sevilla at the weekend.
That could prove to be bad news for Man City though – with the vast point distance already put between Real Madrid and rivals Barca, manager Jose Mourinho may be tempted to put all of his eggs into one European basket with the Champions League perhaps his best shot at glory.
Although Madrid may be striken domestically, they have a fearsome home record in this competition. Real have won their previous 34 opening home games in the Champions League.
[.] In spite of crashing out of the Champions League last season, Manchester City beat eventual Champions League Finalists Bayern Munich 2-0 in the Group Stages. The Germans eliminated Real Madrid from the competition in the semi-finals.
[.] Real Madrid have won the Champions League and its various other incarnations more times (9) than any other club, but haven’t prevailed since 2001/02, when current Spain manager Vincente del Bosque led them to glory.
