Spurs Transfer News: Tottenham Close To Signing David Villa?

Villa Tottenham Hotspur are closing in on a deal for Barcelona's unsettled stiker David Villa, according to talkSPORT and reports in Spain. Earlier this week, Spanish radio station Cadena Ser claimed the deal was in the final stages of negotiations with both parties pleased with the progress. Villa has become disillusioned with life at the Nou Camp since returning from a lengthy layoff on the sidelines with injury and is not happy with playing second fiddle to Lionel Messi. Tottenham meanwhile are desperate for more strikers with Gareth Bale shouldering much of the attacking burden up front this season in the absence of Emmanuel Adebayor and Jermain Defoe through injury. Villa, who is Spain's all time record goalscorer, came close to joining London rivals Arsenal in the January transfer window having been heavily linked with a move to the Emirates, but Arsene Wenger stopped short of making an offer for the star when it became apparent Barcelona weren't interested in a sale. But the landscape at the Nou Camp is now a different one and following the Catalan's humiliating exit at the hands of Bayern Munich from the Champions League, manager Tito Vilanova is prepared to get rid of some of the deadwood as he builds for next season. Villa has apparently spoken directly to Andre Villas-Boas and an agreement is said to be imminent.
