Stoke City Close To Breaking Transfer Record For Champions League Winner

The Potters have reportedly reached a £12 million agreement for Shaqiri.

Stoke City could be about to pull off one of the biggest shocks of the summer with reports claiming the club have had a £12 million bid accepted for Inter Milan star Xherdan Shaqiri. The Swiss international starred in Brazil at last year's World Cup, but a move from Bayern Munich to the Italian side in January has failed to take off and it looks like the midfielder could be playing in the Premier League by August. In a report by The Metro, it is claimed that the Potters will break their transfer record for the 23-year-old, who scored three goals in four appearances for Switzerland at the 2014 World Cup before his nation were knocked out by runners-up Argentina. Before the speedy playmaker made his move to Milan, however, Shaqiri was part of the first Bayern Munich side to win a treble in the club's history - picking up Champions League, Bundesliga and German Cup medals during his time in Germany. Despite the lack of appearances that followed and his failed spell in Serie A, the former Basle player was reported to be on the radar of both Liverpool and Everton. However, Mark Hughes seems to have captured another landmark signing for his club, who have already added Jakob Haugaard and Philipp Wollschield to their books, with the latter moving permanently following a successful loan spell last season. The high transfer fee may well be funded by the seemingly likely departure of Asmir Begovic to Chelsea.
