Sunderland Transfer News: Kieran Richardson NOT Returning

Black Cats aren't interested in bringing back Aston Villa utility man to fix their defensive woes.

Update: Sunderland Echo reported Tuesday evening that although Kieran Richardson is expected to leave Aston Villa before the closure of this transfer window, the Stadium of Light won't be his destination. They say Sunderland simply aren't interested in bringing him back. Sunderland are eyeing a £2 million move for Aston Villa and former Black Cat utility man Kieran Richardson, according to the Daily Mirror. The 30-year-old, who is adept at playing on the left-hand side of defence or midfield, has just one year left to run on his Aston Villa contract. He joined Villa just three years ago after spending half a decade on Wearside, totting up 134 appearances in Red and White, including scoring a memorable free-kick in a Tyne/Weir victory over Newcastle United (back in the days before this occurrence became common place!). Sunderland have endured a nightmare start to the 2015/16 campaign, conceding seven goals in two games and looking in desperate need of new recruits, particularly at the back. However, Richardson seems like a strange move for the Black Cats to fix their goal leakage issues as he reportedly left Sunderland in the first place in order to play in midfield rather than in defence. Meanwhile, the recent arrival of Jordan Amavi at Villa Park, who impressed last Friday against Manchester United, could mean Richardson's days in the Midlands are numbered and it's being reported that boss Tim Sherwood is willing to allow the former England international to leave. Richardson came on as a sub during Villa's opening day win over Bournemouth but watched from the bench during the loss to Manchester United last Friday.
