Swansea 2-2 Liverpool - Mixed Emotions For Ex-Liverpool Man Jonjo Shelvey

Jonjo Shelvey was the name on everybody's lips last night after he had a hand in all the goals in a pulsating game at the Liberty Stadium which saw his old club Liverpool return to the top of the Premier League unbeaten. The match enthralled from the off with two goals in three minutes €“ Shelvey scored before gifting stray balls to Liverpool's on-form Daniel Sturridge and Victor Moses, yet redeemed himself with an assist for Michu's first league goal of the season. In the opening minutes Liverpool twice failed to clear an Angel Rangel cross, giving the under-21 international space for a mis-hit volley, followed up with a tidy finish past Simon Mignolet in the ensuing melee. Though they conceded their first goal of the season, the Reds weren't behind for long as the 21-year-old went from hero to zero €“ his weak back-pass was anticipated by Sturridge, who leapt onto the ball and buried the finish first time. With the game settling down, Liverpool could've doubled their lead after Moses surged forth to deliver a pitch-perfect cross to Sturridge, but the England international saw his header saved by a back-pedalling Michel Vorm. The night then went from bad to worse for Shelvey on 36 minutes as he once again gave away the ball while attempting to spread the play €“ the onrushing Moses intercepted, ran at the defence again and fired in a low near-post effort past the sprawling Vorm. Yet the Swans responded well with efforts from Michu and Nathan Dyer and began to impose themselves after half-time, capitalising on a Liverpool shorn of Coutinho after a clumsy Ashley Williams challenge. With the Reds' attacking flow disrupted, Shelvey managed to redeem himself on 64 minutes €“ getting in behind Mohamed Sakho, the former Charlton man threaded a right-wing cross to Michu, who tucked it home for the equaliser. The Swans could've snatched an unlikely victory themselves at the death as Shelvey and Jonathan de Guzman's whipped in free-kicks came close to troubling Liverpool's Belgian keeper. However, the Merseyside club held on to maintain their unbeaten start and one-point lead at the Premier League summit €“ Swansea rise to 13th, a point behind rivals Cardiff.
