Team Update: Newcastle Set To Start Florian Thauvin And Siem de Jong Against Northampton

NUFC's latest signing will earn his full debut against the Cobblers at St James' Park.

Steve McClaren has said that Florian Thauvin will start against Northampton Town tonight as Newcastle embark on their Capital One Cup campaign.

The Magpies' boss also hinted that Siem de Jong could be named in the first team and said that he "should be chomping at the bit to play."

Fringe players Mike Williamson and Cheick Tiote will also start the game with either Karl Darlow or Rob Elliot playing in goal.

McClaren is set to hand Thauvin his first start for Newcastle after the midfielder made his competitive debut against Manchester United at the weekend where he came on as a substitute.

The Magpies' boss also mentioned that Paul Dummett could be on the bench for tonight's game after making good progress on his hamstring injury.

The Toon boss said:

€œIt will be nice if Thauvin can come in and have a game, Cheicky hasn€™t played this season.

"The likes of Williamson would benefit from a game and Paul Dummett is coming back from injury. He might be on the bench.

€œSiem de Jong should be chomping at the bit to play.

€œIt will be a strong team and a strong bench.€ Vurnon Anita, who took a knock to his back on Saturday, will be rested along with Fabricio Coloccini.

"Meanwhile, Emmanuel Riviere is still a €œfew weeks€ away after knee surgery."

The kick-off time for tonight's game is 7.45pm at St James' Park.
