Tottenham Sack Manager Andre Villas-Boas

Tottenham Hotspur have sacked manager Andre Villas-Boas, BBC Sport reports in a breaking news story. The decision came after Spurs' woeful 5-0 home thrashing at the hands of Liverpool on Sunday, a result that was the North London club's worst at White Hart Lane for 16 years. The club currently lie seventh in the Premier League, five points off the Champions League places and eight points away from rivals Arsenal in 1st. Spurs released a statement announcing Villas-Boas' departure; "The club can announce that agreement has been reached with head coach, Andre Villas-Boas, for the termination of his services," said a Spurs statement. "The decision was by mutual consent and in the interests of all parties." The wording in the statement that the decision to sack Villa-Boas was "mutual" and in the "interests of all parties" will be curious to Tottenham fans who will have read this morning that Villas-Boas was determined to carry on as boss and that he wouldn't resign. It had been previously reported that Tottenham were to hold a meeting with Villas-Boas today to discuss his future and this would appear to be the outcome. Villas-Boas had been in charge for 18 months but had failed to achieve qualification for Champions League football last year and was well beyond the pace so far this season. It's not yet clear who Tottenham Chairman Daniel Levy will go to for his next appointment but current Queens Park Rangers boss Harry Redknapp might be seen as an early fan favourite after his prior success with the club. Earlier in the month we wrote a feature chronicling the five candidates to be the next Tottenham Hotspur manager should Andre Villas-Boas be sacked.
