Ultimate Fighter 16 Finale: Nelson vs. Mitrione Podcast Review

TUF-16-Finale In part 2 of the Getting Lucky MMA podcast Ultimate Fighter spectacular, I am joined by fellow MMA columnist, Marcus Mitchell, to break down all the action in the Ultimate Fighter 16 Finale. As a surprise move, Dana did not invite any of the season contestants other than the finalists to partake on the card, obviously to shake up the complacency in the housemates over lackluster performances and commitment. The card was highlighted by Roy Nelson dominating Matt Mitrione on the feet with a beautiful uppercut. The fight was punctuated with a well-timed flurry by Big Country to turn off Meathead's lights completely. The TUF 16 Welterweight champion was also crowned, US Army Ranger Colton Smith.

Nine out of the eleven fights ended via finish. Undoubtedly, the fans at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino were quite thrilled. Tim Elliot won via UD over Jared Papazian in Flyweight. Mike Rio earned a first round armbar over John Cofer in Lightweight. The last fight on the Facebook prelim card, Bantamweight Hugo Viana KO'ed Reuben Duran with a first round punch. The Fuel TV card saw TJ Waldburger choke out Nick Catone in a 2nd round triangle followed by a beautiful suplex KO by Russian newcomer Rustam Khabilov over TUF veteran Vinc Pichel. Johny Bedford earned a KO over Brazilian TUF veteran Marcos Vinicius in the second and Mike Pyle overcome a fast start by James Head to earn a TKO with knees and punches. The main card lead off with Dustin Poirier against Jonathan Brookins. Poirier won via first round d'arce choke. Pat Barry earned KO of the night for stopping Shane del Rosario early in the second. Colton Smith won the TUF Finale with a UD over Canadian Mike Ricci with a well deserved unanimous decision. And Roy Nelson, as mentioned above, took out Matt Mitrione in an easy first round technical knockout.
