Why John Carver Was Right To Say Newcastle Didn't 'Bottle' The QPR Game

Geordie John was talking sense, but he didn't know it...

"I'm not so sure about 'bottled it'. We had a 10-minute mad spell in the game. In the first half we were in control not under any threat. "But then we shot ourselves in the foot again in that 10 minutes after half-time. It was in our hands today and we could have put it to bed today." Those were the words of Newcastle United Head Coach John Carver after the weekend's shambolic defeat away to already relegated Queens Park Rangers. Of course, we all know what he meant with these words. Carver was defending The Magpies' performance albeit for a 10 minute spell just after half time. John will undoubtedly be pleased with what he saw as he will claim Newcastle nullified Rangers' attack in the first half and after their two goals flew in. However, the reality of the situation is that the home side didn't turn up, got one goal that their open to the second half deserved and then comfortably saw out the game once the lead was theirs. Carver's words made complete sense due to the fact that you need to have bottle in the first place in order to lose it. Although he obviously didn't realise his own genius at the time. Newcastle haven't had any bottle for a number of years now.
Yes the current squad ended Chelsea's undefeated start to the Premier League, but apart from that what have they allowed us to shout about all season? Or last season for that matter. A win at Old Trafford and anther win against Jose Mourinho was just about all we got to enjoy. Another win at home to Chelsea and a valiant Europa League quarter final appearance was all we had to brag about the season before that as it could be argued that the class of 2011/12 was the last NUFC team to have any modicum of bottle about them. (They entertained and finished fifth in the process.) The class of 2015 is lucky that there are three teams with less bottle than they do (if that's even conceivable). In all likelihood, they will lose to West Ham on Sunday and survive thanks to Hull City's seemingly inevitable defeat to Manchester United. Surviving due to the short comings of others. That's not how things are meant to be done. Utterly spineless from top to bottom. For all the latest NUFC News, Views and Transfers make sure to follow WhatCultureNUFC on Twitter and Facebook.
