Perhaps not the first thing that would spring to my mind when you're thinking about recent technological advancements. But they are exactly what Phillip Ross has dedicated his entire career to. Teaming up with Mazda, as part of their Challenge Convention To Make Things Better campaign, we can take a look into the future with Phillip and his team as they aim to revolutionise the world with their mushroom-based, eco-friendly, material. What everyday products could we one day see mycelium being used in?

Furniture

Mushroom Furniture Mazda Phillip identified the potential for mycelium at an early stage. "Right at the beginning I was like 'This can be an art material' and so I wanted to create furniture out of it", he said. Chairs, stools, tables; all possible with mycelium and all completely made from mushrooms growing on agricultural waste.

Houses

100% fire and mold resistant, and stronger than concrete, mycelium makes for an ideal compound with which to build the houses of the future.

Mobile Phones

The idea of growing a phone from clippings in your garden and a wood fungus sounds like it is hundreds of years away. But this is exactly the kind of technology that companies are aiming to make true today.

Transport

Cars, trains and planes. The strength and resiliance of mycelium stands it firmly in-line as a potentially ideal, sustainable, substance with which to make cars even more eco-friendly.

Energy

An enzyme produced by fungi could be used a catalyst in fuel cells. The potential here is endless. --- To learn more about Phillip and other Rebels With A cause, click here.
