The company has grown substantially since its first year of operation which saw a full compliment of over 4 ships offering Russian river cruises to the European market. Fast forward to 2016 and it now boasts a total of 64 ships offering routes across 4 different continents, with new routes and new state of the art ships being added every year. After winning numerous awards, not least for their new fleet of Viking longships in 2012 which boasted a patented cabin layout design as well as increased efficiency engines, the success of Viking River Cruises was reflected in the decision they took in 2013 to branch out from river cruising, and launch their Ocean Cruising division. In doing so they increased their number of destination routes, and looked to be able offer even more expansive transcontinental journeys. The Viking Star set sail on it's maiden season during the Spring of 2015, and 2016 and 2017 will see the addition of Viking Sea and Viking Sky to the ranks. Already the company was recognised for their ocean cruises at the Cruise Critics Award 2016 picking up awards for Best Cruise Ship Cabins, Best Cruise Ship For Value, Best Cruise Ship Dining, and Best Cruise Ship Service. The ships boast a selection of 7 different restaurants and dining options. This includes a Norweigan deli-style cafe, a classical Italian restaurant with contemporary elegance, The World Cafe offering open kitchens, and the rather novel Kitchen Table. This is a dining experience where up to 12 guests are taken by the chef to the local markets to source local ingredients, before heading back to the ship to devise their own menu and cook the dishes. It has always been the mentality of Viking to cater for those people who are looking for a more immersive and insightful approach to travelling. They see their demographic as the people who look to visit new places and seek out new experiences as a means to enrich their own lives, rather than those who take a hands off approach and passively observe things from the position of being a tourist. It is for those with a sense of exploration, and who look to immerse themselves in foreign cultures to enhance their own understanding of the world and it's diversity. While also feeling connected with wider global community that we live in. Visit the Viking Cruise website to find out more and to order a 2016 brochure.
